Getting Your Mic Stands Right
They're easy to overlook, but microphone stands are a critical part of any live event setup. The wrong stand in the wrong position can affect sound quality, performer comfort, and the overall professionalism of your production.
Types of Microphone Stands
Straight stands are the most common and versatile. Ideal for podiums, drum kits, and any application where a fixed, vertical position is needed.
Boom stands feature a horizontal arm that allows you to position the microphone away from the stand base — essential for front-of-stage vocal mics, drum overheads, and guitar amplifiers where a straight stand would be in the way.
Short/tabletop stands are designed for seated presentations, panel discussions, conference tables, and interviews. They sit low and keep mics at table level without blocking eye contact.
Weighted base stands provide extra stability for high-traffic areas or outdoor events where wind or crowd movement might knock a standard stand over.
How Many Do You Need?
For a typical live performance event:
- 1 stand per vocal performer
- 2–4 stands for drum microphones
- 1 stand per guitar/bass amplifier
- 1–2 stands for horn sections or acoustic instruments
- Plus spares — always plan for 10–15% overage
For corporate or conference events, figure one stand per table with a mic, plus podium and wireless handheld systems for Q&A.
Why Rent Instead of Buy?
Microphone stands take a beating. They get dropped, bent, and abused at every event. Rental stands from Harmonic Production are inspected before every deployment — you get gear that works reliably every time, without the hassle of maintaining a fleet of stands yourself.
