Event Backline Requirements: A Complete Guide

What Is Backline and Why Does It Matter?

"Backline" refers to the instruments and amplification equipment used by performers on stage — as opposed to the PA system, which delivers sound to the audience. For live music events, providing proper backline is a critical part of artist hospitality and technical rider compliance.

Standard Backline Components

Drum Kit A standard backline drum kit includes a bass drum, snare drum, hi-hat stand, and cymbals (crash, ride, and hi-hat). Most riders specify shell sizes and cymbal brands — Zildjian, Sabian, and Meinl are the most common.

Common rider requests:

  • 22" x 18" bass drum
  • 14" x 6.5" maple snare
  • 14" hi-hat cymbals
  • 16" and 18" crash cymbals
  • 20" ride cymbal

Guitar Amplification Guitar amplifier riders vary widely by artist preference. Common requests include Fender Twin Reverbs for clean sounds, Marshall JCM800s or JCM900s for classic rock, and Mesa Boogie or Two-Rock amplifiers for boutique applications.

Always confirm: head-and-cabinet or combo? What speaker configuration? Does the artist bring their own speakers?

Bass Amplification The Ampeg SVT heads and 8x10 cabinets ("the fridge") are the industry standard for bass backline. Some artists prefer Markbass, Gallien-Krueger, or Aguilar systems.

Keyboards Keyboard backline can mean a simple stand and DI box, or a full weighted 88-key piano action with organ emulation. Confirm the number of tiers needed and whether the artist needs an amplifier or can go direct.

Reading Artist Technical Riders

Artists' technical riders specify their backline requirements in detail. Common rider language like "or equivalent" gives you flexibility — a Fender Blues DeVille might substitute for a Twin Reverb. Work closely with the artist's production manager to confirm acceptable substitutions.
