Building a Professional Live Stream
Live streaming has transformed how audiences experience events. A concert, conference, or ceremony that once reached only those in the room can now reach thousands — or millions — around the world. But streaming professionally requires purpose-built equipment and expertise.
Cameras
The backbone of any live stream is the camera system. For professional productions, we use broadcast-quality cameras — Sony FS7, Sony FX6, or Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro — capable of producing clean 1080p or 4K footage with low noise in challenging concert lighting conditions.
For multi-camera productions, PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) cameras are increasingly popular — remotely controlled by an operator at the video desk, they can cover multiple angles without requiring a camera operator at each position.
Video Switching
A video switcher (or vision mixer) is what allows an operator to cut between camera angles in real time. The Blackmagic ATEM systems are the industry standard for most live stream productions — the ATEM Mini Extreme handles up to 8 inputs at 1080p60, while the ATEM Constellation scales to 40+ inputs for large-format broadcasts.
Switching is a skill. A good video operator understands camera angles, timing, and storytelling — cutting to the right camera at the right moment to keep the stream engaging.
Audio for Streaming
Stream audio must be mixed separately from the house PA. The audience watching at home needs a clean stereo mix that translates well through headphones and phone speakers — not a raw feed from the house console.
Our streaming packages include a dedicated stream mix output, typically fed from an aux send on the FOH console, processed through a broadcast limiter and loudness normalization for consistent levels across platforms.
Encoding and Delivery
The encoded stream is delivered to your platform of choice — YouTube Live, Facebook Live, Twitch, Vimeo, or custom RTMP endpoints — via a hardware or software encoder. We use Teradek and Blackmagic hardware encoders for reliable, redundant delivery with built-in backup paths.
Don't stream over WiFi. Always use a wired ethernet connection or a cellular bonding solution (we use Teradek Bond) for reliable connectivity at venues where wired options aren't available.
Redundancy Is Everything
In live streaming, there are no second chances. Our stream packages include redundant encoders, redundant internet connections, and backup power for all critical components. When your event goes live to thousands of viewers, failure is not an option.
